WE ARE ONE
Osu! Praise God, I sending you this scripture because I believe it represents us and our system. It is taken from the New Testament 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 10: No I plead with you brethren by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that you speak the same things, and that there be no divisions among you, be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. We must be this way spiritually, emotionally, and physically in our beliefs and practices. This is who and what we are as believers in the Lord and as martial artists. May God bless you all.
SACRIFICE
Osu! I pray all is well with each of you and your families. I give praise and thanks to God for His continued blessings and His guidance. As mentioned in the past we have achieved a great deal in a short period of time only by the grace of God. I must admit there have been periods that I have been frustrated, stress and even to the point of asking myself is this all worth it. I would question myself "do my instructors see my vision and the goal of this organization?" I pray all do. I also question myself "Am I rushing things, putting to many demands or burdens on you that you cannot bear?" Then my faith in the Lord comes into play and the scripture teaches that God will not place burdens on us that we cannot bear, but we much stay focus. At times I know my judgment will be questioned by each of you, I'm only asking that all of you stay focus and be patient. It took God six days to create the heavens and the earth and the Bible teaches that 1 day is as of 50,000 years.
We are still in the infancy stage of our development and this is the hardest test of any organization when starting out to maintain focus and to have faith in what we are trying to achieve. We must be of one mind and willing to accept even what appears to be poor decisions even from the leadership. Don't view a decision that you might not agree in disappointment, but view it as an opportunity to grow and be creative, There will be periods of time when you think things are not going well and during those time we must dig in deeper and ensure that we get stay on track and maintain our focus.
In maintaining our focus to be the best we can be there will be sacrifices we must make and these sacrifices will only make us stronger. We will at times sacrifice being with family (love ones), money (in which we have little of), and time (which seems like we don't have enough of). In making these sacrifices many will not agree or understand what we are trying to accomplish, do your best to let them know it is not just for you but for others, ask your love ones to participate in any way they can, and most importantly asks them to be patient with you. I'm asking each of you to maintain your focus, be patient with me, I too need your assistance and most of all your support to build this empire. I truly believe that God's blessings are with us if we trust in Him and maintain our focus. Osu! AN EMPIRE OR ORGANIZATION IS RARELY DESTROYED FROM THE OUTSIDE BUT DESTROYED FROM WITHIN.
HANDLE WITH CARE
Osu! I want all of you to understand the importance of the task you have agreed to undertake. Not only are we to be patient with one another we must be patient with our students. I want you to think of your students as precious china or the clay in the potter's hands- THEY ARE FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE. Osu!
DESIRE
Osu! I pray all is well with all you, your families, students and friends. Today, I was thinking what can we do to help our students to learn what we want to instill in them as martial artists to make them better. One word keep coming to my mind and I thought this is the key to being successful in anything we are involved in, and that word is DESIRE. I thought back to the many things I participated in and have to admit everything that I cared about whether it was high jumping, boxing, karate, academics I had a strong DESIRE to be the best. Without DESIRE there cannot be commitment or dedication and we become mediocre accepting to the status quo we become comfortable and lazy not giving it our all. The definition of DESIRE is as follows: A longing, hope, strong intentions, strong feeling of want to achieve. Think about the goals you accomplished in life it was because you has a strong DESIRE. We must do our best to instill this quality in our students so that they too will learn to become committed and dedicated to their goals. Teach them to have the DESIRE to learn their blocks, punches, kicks, katas, and fighting techniques. To me DESIRE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF HAVING A LOVE FOR SOMETHING OR SOMEONE and you cannot be without it. We must show our students how much we DESIRE and LOVE what we are doing. May God bless you all and keep you safe.
INTEGRITY
Osu! May the blessings, grace, and mercy of the Lord be upon each of you. As Kancho, I believe it is my duty to bestow upon you knowledge, and wisdom to ensure we are all growing in our quest to become first and foremost servants of the Lord, martial artists, instructors, leaders and most importantly role models to one another as well as our students. Yes we are role models to each other and must set the example. I and Shihan Greg are to set the example, but never forget we too can learn from you. Our mission teaches us we are to provide quality instructions and training to our students in order to do this we must do our utmost to be the best we can be in our training. From our goal we learn it is mandatory to develop ourselves along with our students spiritually, physically, and emotionally. We must be there for one another to motivate each other spiritually, physically and emotionally, and the only way to do this is to communicate with each other.
We must encourage one another to be successful in all aspects of our lives we are more than students of the martial arts we are family. Our oath states in order to achieve the Ultimate Meaning of Kaifuku Kerai Shin we must dedicate ourselves to karate meaning dedicate and commit time to studying the Word of God, practice your arts daily to sharpen your skills and take time out to enjoy yourself to strengthen you emotionally. We learn from our Mottos We must Humble Ourselves before God and mankind and Work towards Perfection. Never be boastful, let humility be your guide and teach this to your students. In the Religious Principles we come to understand as Resilient Servants of God We Must be Watchful, Stand Firm in Our Faith (God, one another and our system of karate), We must be strong for one another, our families, students, friends and the community in which we live. Our Mission, Goal, Oath, Mottos, and Religious Prinicples are not just mere words I truly believe in every word and will do my utmost to be an example of them. As Kancho I'm asking all of you to do the same.
FOCUS
Osu! I want to thank each and everyone of you for your loyalty, dedication and commitment to our organization's success in such a short period of time. I believe God has blessed us in a mighty way and we will continue to be successful. I'm very proud of each one of you and thank God for being part of this DREAM TEAM. We must not lose focus on our personal and organizational goals to be the very best we can be as instructors and role models for ourselves and most importantly our students, We have achieved much in this short period and I'm looking forward towards working with each of you in the coming year. I must insist that we adhere to our oath, mottos, religious principles, mission and goal and that our INTEGRITY AND CHARACTER be the bedrock of KAIFUKU KERAI SHIN RYU. Always remember we must walk the walk and talk the talk by leading by example.
We cannot asks of our students if we are not willing to do it ourselves. Believe me they watch our every move and expect us to be perfect as their teachers and leaders. I'm looking forward towards our winter training session and I want you to bring your thoughts and ideas on how we can improve and expand. We must be supportive of one another in every way we can even just by giving a phone call. All organization have ups and downs but we can limit the downs by being open and honest with our thoughts and feelings. I MAY BE THE HEAD BUT THE HEAD IS NOTHING WITHOUT THE BODY (ALL OF YOU). May we all continue to strive to may this organization the best it can be.
RESILIENCE
Osu! My desire as Kancho is to pour into to all of you the wisdom and knowledge I believe I receive from the Lord. The Word of the Lord teaches us in Philippians 4:13, we are taught I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me. In our religious principles line 9 it states As resilient servants we can do all things through Him who strengthen us. There is another scripture that has inspired me to share with all of you that comes out of Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. As I mentioned in the past this is who we are and this is what we do. WE ARE RESILIENT SERVANTS OF GOD. When Cain killed his brother Abel he did much more than just killing his body prior to the killing just right before the fatal blow Cain killed the love he ever had for his brother, father, mother and most of all his love for God. In our quest to be the best we must always remember this it is my mandate WE ARE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTER'S KEEPER
CHANGE
Osu! In order to be successful in life one must have the courage to take risk without doubts or fear of failure. Have the courage to change the way you think, change the way you talk, walk, and act and you will be victorious.
PRIORITIES
Osu! I'm using these two quotes from my Lord Jesus and Sosai Mas Oyama because I believe it is appropriate:
Jesus states in Matthew 6:24 No one can serve two masters; for either will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot God and mammon (mammon is anything you view as important). In this verse we are taught to make a choice on who you will serve also, what are your priorities in life.
As Kancho, I believe I made it perfectly clear what I believe should be one's priorities but I will restate them. God, Family and the anything else you believe to be of great importance to you for example, education or karate. When you find yourself in conflict with your priorities you need to sit back and re-evaluate them to determine the impact that it is having on your life. For me God comes first, then my family and then karate. These are the areas I spend the most time with. I don't put karate before my family nor will I put my family before my God. Those are the standards I choose to live by. I pray all of you will be able to determine what is important in your life and whatever it is STICK WITH IT.
If I make a commitment to God, family or karate I need to ensure that I do my best to follow it through otherwise my integrity will be in question. Quote from Sosai Mas Oyama - "A man who understands decorum and the courtesies is a great treasure; I hope to train and send into society as many such men as I can." I love this quote from Sosai because it speaks volumes of what his vision was when he established Kyokushinkai. The definition of decorum is correct or proper behavior that shows respect and good manners at all times. The definition of courtesies is the showing of politeness in one's attitude and behavior towards others. I believe Sosai wanted to surround himself with these types of people to ensure success in Kyokushinkai. I also believe initially those that decided to follow him accepted his direction, guidance, wisdom and knowledge, but later for whatever reason choose to go their own way, and some without giving honor to the one who taught them.
As I stated in the past we have come a long way and have a long way to go, but if we do not stay focus (follow through with what we promised) and create a balance in our lives (our priorites) we too shall fail. No one embarks on an undertaking to fail and all paths in life has ups and downs the key here is to do your best to have more up than downs.
Through committing, dedicating and being consistent our paths in life will be straight and successful.
I love each of you and pray that God will continue to bless us to achieve the ultimate meaning of Kaifuku Kerai Shin.
ROLE MODEL
Are you a role model or just modeling a role. Always be aware that someone be it a family member, friend or anyone you have an influence on in life is watching you, checking you out observing your values, morals, conduct, and behavior. Strive to be someone that others can emulate
DEPENDABLE AND TRUSTWORTHY
The soul of a martial artist is that they are dependable and trustworthy- able to be trusted to do or provide what is needed
RELIABILITY
Osu! What does it mean to be Reliable? This definition has haunted man since the beginning of time. The term means to be consistently good in quality or performance, also to be trusted or to provide what is needed. It means to be a person of one’s word therefore having integrity. As I stated in the first line this has haunted man since the beginning of time. God trusted Adam and Eve to take care of the garden, but due to their inability to be reliable and being easily influence they exercise poor judgment causing them to be kick out of paradise. God could no longer rely on them. There was a time though when a man\women WORD meant something it was their BADGE of HONOR. Nowadays it has become just a cliché with no foundation like a puff of smoke evaporating into the air. As leaders, it is our duty to be reliable; it is our mandate to follow through on what we commit ourselves to do. We all including me fall short at times in fulfilling an obligation, but the least thing we can do is to ensure those whom we have made a commitment too we follow it through. Intentions are just that intentions; what make intentions valid are the actions that follow. Being unreliable has cause nations too lose their power, organizations to crumple, relationships\friendships to wither away like ashes in a fire. Asks yourself what do you rely\depend upon and trust. Our students rely, depend, and trust that we will make them disciplined martial artists (Honoring Those Who Lead Us). The only way this can be accomplished is by incorporating this attribute (Reliability) into our daily lives. We must be reliable to those who depend on us to show them the true path of Kaifuku Kerai Shin. This is not just a name to a karate system it is a lifestyle; RESILIENT SERVANTS OF GOD to Kancho, Shihan, Instructors, Students, Families, and friends. My martial art’s spirit weeps for Mas Oyama who relied upon those he trusted to further his system of karate, only to destroy it because they became UNRELIABLE. The Bushido Way is embedded in a system based on reliability, dependability, trust, loyalty, commitment, dedication, respect, unity and most of all love. OSU! OSU! OSU!
